The Women’s Empowerment Desk (WED) is a specialized unit under the Social and Resource Development Fund (SARD), Department of Finance, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). Its origins date back to 2006, when a gender-focused project was launched to address issues affecting women in the Tibetan community.
After two years of implementing gender-related initiatives, the Central Tibetan Administration recognized the need for a comprehensive policy framework to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. As a result, the Women’s Empowerment Policy (WEP) was formulated in 2008, and the Women’s Empowerment Desk (WED) was established to implement and advance policy objectives.
Since its establishment, WED has remained committed to promoting gender equality and enhancing the rights, opportunities, and well-being of Tibetan women. Through policy advocacy, capacity-building programs, awareness campaigns, research, and community engagement, WED works to foster a more equitable, inclusive, and gender-responsive Tibetan society.
WED collaborates with government departments, civil society organizations, educational institutions, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen gender-responsive practices, address gender-based challenges, and create an enabling environment where women and girls can thrive.
